Volunteer Controller – Role Description & Person Spec

Controllers are essential to ensuring volunteers in the field are:
- Properly tasked
- Well supported
- Operating safely and effectively
The Role
H4x4 Controllers play a central role in enabling the organisation to operate safely and effectively. Controllers coordinate volunteers, manage information and communications, and support decision-making during incidents and events, often in time-critical situations.
Key Responsibilities
- Receive and assess requests for support
- Use the CAD (Computer Assisted Dispatch) system to allocate and task volunteer responders across the Highlands
- Maintain accurate logs and records
- Communicate clearly with volunteers and partner agencies
- Monitor evolving situations and adapt plans as needed
- Support responder welfare during and after deployments
Skills & Qualities We’re Looking For
Essential:
- Strong commitment to supporting communities
- Ability to remain calm and focused under pressure
- Good IT and digital skills
- Clear written and verbal communication
- Organised, reliable, and professional
- Experience in coordination, control, logistics, or operations
- Background in emergency services, or voluntary response
- Familiarity with the Highlands area
Time Commitment
- Flexible and variable depending on incidents and events
- Typically, rota-based
- Evening and weekend availability will likely be required during busy deployments
- All our volunteers are just that, volunteers! , and are only required to give the time that they have available. Personal life and family always come first.
